1950s ICONS
- Above is just one of the many books and magazines that Marilyn Monroe adorned in 1954. In one month alone she managed to appear on the cover of no fewer than 16 publications and was by the decade’s end universally proclaimed as the sex symbol of the 1950’s. Since then there have been many imitators but not one of them has ever captured the magical simultaneous combination of sexual allure and pure innocence.
Britain offered up its own Monroe in the shapely form of Diana Dors, and in an era in which the female sex symbol came of age, there were many pretenders to Monroe’s crown, each of them beauties in their own right. On the pages that follow we look at the female icons of the 1950’s.
